Happy Monday everyone, and welcome to another good news story! With everyone watching ‘The Crown’ on Netflix at the moment, we thought we’d share an uplifting story about the monarchy (and gin!).

Queen Elizabeth has launched a speciality dry gin distilled from the botanicals on her 20,000-acre Sandringham country estate.

The Norfolk estate gardens has all the delicious ingredients for the gin, and each bottle can take up to two weeks to make. The beverage is made with Sharon fruit, a woody tree related to ebony, which is also known as the Chinese persimmon. It grows in the Walled Garden on a sheltered wall at the end of what was a range of glass houses, built on the winnings of the famous racehorse, Persimmon, owned by King Edward VII. Another ingredient in the gin is myrtle leaves which also grow on the estate. These plants originated from a cutting taken from Princess Alexandra’s wedding bouquet on her marriage to Prince Albert Edward, who later became King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. According to a former Buckingham Palace chef, the Queen is a fan of gin, and treats herself every day to an iced cocktail of gun and Dubonnet with a slice of lemon at lunchtime.

The Sandringham Gin is not the only alcoholic beverage from the British Royals. In fact, Buckingham Palace gardens also produces a gin made from lemon, verbena, hawthorn berries, and mulberry leaves, plus eight other hand-picked botanicals from the gardens.

In addition to the, Balmoral Castle in Scotland also produces a single-malt whiskey at Royal Lochnagar Distillery, which contains notes of oak and fruit. Prince Charles’ Highgrove Estate in Cornwall also produces a range of organic spirits.

The Sandringham Estate produced gin costs £50 per 50cl bottle and it’s recommended to be served by pouring a measure into an ice-filled short tumbler, before topping up with tonic and garnishing with a slice of lemon.
