Today (Thursday 3rd March) is University Mental Health Day. Going to university is a huge life transition, and whilst it can be a lot of fun, it can also bring about a range of challenges.
From coping with looming deadlines to missing home, alongside consuming alcohol and perhaps not getting the vital 5-a-day in, many university students experience mental health problems.
University Mental Health Day is all about raising awareness, and making mental health a university-wide priority, to create ongoing change to the future of student mental health.
The good news is, whatever is going on in your life, our 8Wise™️ model can help you protect and improve your mental health. It can be used both as a prevention and recovery tool, so whether you’re currently experiencing mental health problems, or are in a stable period, it can help you.
8Wise consists of eight wellness elements which are all intrinsic to our mental health and wellbeing: Physical Wellness, Emotional Wellness, Occupational Wellness, Intellectual Wellness, Financial Wellness, Spiritual Wellness, Environmental Wellness, and Social Wellness.
Let’s take a look at some examples of common issues that students face at university and how 8Wise can help…
Ever heard of the term ‘freshers flu’? It’s pretty common for students to be struck down by colds, the flu, bugs. When you take a look at the typical student lifestyle, it’s no surprise really! They may be cooking for themselves for the first time and are living off ready meals or super noodles, perhaps they’re pulling all nighters in the library trying to finish an essay. Or maybe they’re loosing sleep due to going out drinking with friends and having to get up early the next morning for a 9am lecture.
A lack of quality sleep, a poor diet, and excessive alcohol consumption is a sure fire way to feel rubbish physically. And when you feel rubbish physically, you start to feel rubbish emotionally too. You’ll be tired, grouchy, perhaps make poor decisions, experience low mood, the list goes on.
Physical Wellness is one of our core elements of 8Wise, because we know just how important it is for your overall wellbeing and mental health. When you look after your body with good foods, water, eight hours sleep, exercise, you feel better about yourself mentally too.
Financial Wellness is another one of our eight core elements, and it lies under the ‘Lifestyle Dimension’. It’s pretty common for students not to have that much disposable income, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be a stress trigger. Financial Wellness doesn’t mean being rich, it’s about understanding money, identifying what it means to you, knowing how to budget, and living within your means. Worrying about money can really impact your mental health, so achieving Financial Wellness is really important for looking after it.
As humans, we all crave interaction with others. It’s embedded in our DNA. That’s why another of our core wellness elements is Social Wellness. When we’re lonely and not experiencing Social Wellness, it can have a real negative impact on our mental health and wellbeing. It can cause low mood, which then might make us feel less motivated to cook a good meal or exercise, which then will make us feel physically unwell, which as you know comes right back around to impacting our emotional wellness. When we nurture our other wellness elements, we’re more likely to want to go out and join that society, or talk to that person in your lectures.
As you can probably tell, each of our wellness elements interact and impact each other. In order to experience good mental health, and overall wellness, we need to make sure that we are looking after each of these elements. That is where our book 8Wise Ways To A Healthier Happier Mind comes into it!
Our book provides you with the knowledge you need to look after your mental health. It provides you with self reflection activities to identify your current wellbeing levels, plus activities you can use to create an action play and set goals for yourself.
