WTFI ……… The 8 Dimensions of Wellness

We are not just ‘multi-dimensional’ – we are 8 dimensionalWhen I first started to research Wellness and found out it translates to basically mean ‘Happiness’ I started to get nervous that it was a ‘fluffy’ topic that would be so ‘left to interpretation’ that I would find myself in a further state of confusion, stress and anxiety – which my mental health could not afford. I was holding on by my fingernails through gritted teeth, so I needed clear, concise and simple ……. and I needed it quick. As my previous Blogs have mentioned I have an issue with ‘Time’, I need things simply when I need them (my internal dilemma, I want peace and balance but I have no patience, doh!)

I found many different theories about the different variable and dimensions that Wellness covered but they always felt they were missing some crucial elements that was important in my life. Then I found the 8 Dimensions of Wellness and suddenly I started to have clarity and faith that I could manage my self-care in a way that suited my personality, goals, objectives, tangible outcomes … limited fluff. (I am not against soft holistic approaches, everything plays a vital part, but they simply do not get the best out of me, and we all have to find the best way for ourselves).
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) identified eight dimensions of wellness to focus on to optimize overall health:

  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Intellectual
  • Physical
  • Environmental
  • Financial
  • Occupational
  • Social

When I started to focus on the 8 dimensions with regards to my own life I was then able to start planning and managing my own self-care better. That is when I started to see positive changes for me on a personal level. My Stress and Anxiety decreased, as did my Depression and Negative thinking patterns and Behaviours. It sounds very ‘cliché, but I finally started to get to know myself better and that is where balance started to become involved in my thinking and behavioural processes. I became more productive and my personal and professional performance increased – I felt back into control, where for so long I felt I had been spiralling out of it.

On a professional note I started to identify how the 8 Dimensions of Wellness could be embedded into my Life Coaching, Career Coaching and Business Coaching practices to support my clients with their own Professional and Personal challenges. So, I started the ‘Be 8 Wise‘ programme that supports clients to understand the 8 Dimensions and the positive behaviours it can generate.

The approach is simple and supports the approaches I work at my best with – Smart Goal setting and working towards tangible outcomes, whether it be for personal or professional success.

So, I say “Get SMART”, “Take back Control”, “Be 8 Wise”, put “You First” and use “The 8 Dimensions of Wellness” to support yourself in developing the best Self-Care Plan for yourself as possible.
